The ever so thoughtful Cordelia tagged me to participate in ‘The Ultimate Christmas Q&A.’ Thanks so much! Check out her blog and answers: here. As I avoid packing for an upcoming trip (flight leaves tonight) this was such a fun post to fill out:
What is your favorite Christmas film?
This one was actually pretty tough, but I do think when looking back to one movie I’d always watch as a kid on Christmas, it’d be the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas cartoon. The roast beast was my favorite part. I also secretly love Frozen. Shh..
Have you ever had a white Christmas?
Yes! Although it doesn’t look very likely this year.
Where do you usually spend Christmas?
I think for the past several years I’ve actually had to work on Christmas day. I do make sure I have Christmas eve and Christmas morning off if I can, in which case I’d be at my parents’ house!
What are your favorite Christmas songs?
All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey and also in recent years fell in love with Carrie Underwood’s Do You Hear What I Hear.
When does your family put up your Christmas tree?
When I was growing up I remember it was probably soon after Thanksgiving, other times maybe cutting it a little closer to Christmas. To be fair, it was a fake tree where you had to attach each and every single branch separately and it was over 12 feet tall and really fat all around… so it was a big task for everyone to help put up and get decorated. In my house now, I have a super easy to assemble tree so it goes up ASAP after Thanksgiving.
Do you open presents on Christmas Eve?
Yes! That’s always been my family’s tradition. My grandpa was a pastor so each year my dad’s family would open presents on Christmas eve night since they’d need to be at Christmas morning mass the next day.
What holiday traditions are you looking forward to most this year?
Just spending time with my family!
Who decorates the Christmas tree?
Now and days I do and I love it! Growing up all of us kids helped, though I’m sure my dad did most of the heavy lifting.
Is your Christmas tree fake or real?
Fake and it has the lights already built into it! So convenient, but some of the lights have already died. Will likely be getting a new one next year. One year my friend and I took her old real tree to a farm because apparently goats LOVE eating (clean) Christmas trees. It was so cute I almost considered getting a real one.
Do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts?
Both to be completely honest. I get so excited picking out gifts for other people and seeing how happy they are when they open them, but obviously it makes me feel really special to receive thoughtful gifts from my friends and family too.
What is your favorite holiday treat/meal?
Growing up my mom would always make an assortment of really unique Christmas cookies which I would always look forward too. I’m not really sure what my favorite ones are called but it’s some sort of dough, that’s pressed into a butterfly shaped mold, fried and then dusted with powder sugar. YUM!
What is the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
My parents and siblings spoil me every single year but there are two presents that stick out as ones that I went crazy over growing up. One was an M&M Cookie Jar..long story on why that was so awesome. The other being a Buzz Lightyear action figure. It was exactly what I was asking for, I remember wanting it so bad but not sure I was going to get it. Then as I was poking and prodding the wrapped presents I must have hit the buttons on his chest that make him talk and I was SO EXCITED.
What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
I think celebrating Christmas in Germany or Catalonia would be amazing. Any place that has huge Christmas markets and festivals really. Going somewhere warm for the holidays is also fun! S. and I are heading to Mexico tonight… although I just checked and it’s likely going to be raining the whole time we’re there… so that’s cool.
Are you a pro present wrapper?
Absolutely! Square presents are easy peasy but I pride myself on getting oddly shaped things wrapped (direct your attention to the present on the far right in the picture below). It wasn’t always this way though. I was notoriously the worst wrapper when I was a kid.
What’s your most memorable holiday moment?
I remember my two sisters and I putting on a Christmas musical on our stairway for my parents when we were really young. I’m sure we sang a few songs but Rudolph the Red Noised Reindeer sticks out in my memory. We also used to visit a Christmas village train ride when we were kids which was honestly the best thing every year.
What makes the holidays special for you?
Definitely just being able to spend time with my whole family, getting to eat good food and give them gifts!
Are you a late Christmas shopper?
There are still a few things I need to get, but I usually am too excited to pick out Christmas presents for people to wait too long.
Do you like having your Christmas gifts kept as a surprise?
Yes! …and no… I’m so curious!
Have you ever peeked to see what your present was?
Yep.. Buzz Lightyear haha
Does your family have a special holiday recipe that you make every year?
My mom’s cookies have been a constant. Other than that, our family likes to cook so we switch up recipes for holiday meals pretty often.
Have you ever gone Christmas-caroling?
Not outside of my own house.
What tops your Christmas tree?
A star! It was a crystal angel while I was growing up.
When do you start getting excited for Christmas?
As soon as I get to put my tree up, but a close second option is when I see areas like downtown put up their Christmas lights and stores put up displays, it’s so cute!
Why do you celebrate Christmas?
My family is Christian so it’s a very important holiday for us. I also think it’s a warm, fuzzy festive time to reflect with your friends and family, think about what you’re grateful for, a reminder to be generous to those less fortunate, and spend time with the people you love.
I tag: Anyone reading this who would like to share their thoughts on Christmas and the holiday season!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
